Dragonia

The World

Topography

Dragonia is settled in a giant volcanic crater. There are two peaks that are still active, though they have been quiet for longer than humans have inhabited Dragonia. The dragons know Dragonia to be the center of their power and the greatest concentration of dragons in the world.

To the northwest lies the Vale of Dragons, a dry, sandy region where many volcanic caves have opened in the walls of the crater and dragons have taken up residence. This is a "no man's land" for humans.

Southeast of the Vale of Dragons lies the Plains of Dragonia. The valley floor is almost uniformly flat, and these plains or no exception. The grasslands support several large herds of beasts that the dragons use to feast upon when hunger strikes them. A few intrepid humans hunt these lands as well, but that can be very dangerous when dragons are about.

Cutting through the Plains of Dragonia flows the Drakanath River. It is fed by a number of tributaries, the greatest of which is the Boreth River, south of the plains. These rivers are warm and slow and born from the walls of the crater. The fishing is good, but the swampy regions are dangerous. The Drakanath River empties into the Lake of Sorrows. The lake is a new lake, forming just a few years after the humans came to this crater. Massive rains swept Dragonia and the lands outside and there was much flooding both within and without Dragonia. Contact outside the crater was severed and the humans believe that all the world was flooded. The dragons aren't telling if that is the case.

Along the southeast side of the crater is the Yarrow Forest, an ancient wood that permits few to enter its heart. Humans have tamed the very edges of the forest to provide for their needs, but don't have the population to completely subdue it.

Populations

There are two recognized sentient species in Dragonia: dragons and humans. Persistent rumours abound that other sentient races have made their way to this crater, but no evidence has been discovered yet.

Dragons are the most populous inhabitants of Dragonia. They are the undisputed rulers of the crater, though they rarely bend their collective wills toward anything like that goal. Most are hidden, sleeping in the many caves of the crater, rarely coming out. Others are gregarious and interact often with other dragons, or even humans.

Humans are the newcomers to the crater. They have only been here for a decade of their years, though the occasional ruin and artifact in the wilderness of Dragonia implies that humans settled here years ago. Many humans believe that this crater was once the site of a great battle between dragons and humans, one in which the dragons forced a great human civilization out of the crater. The dragons, as is their habit, won't tell. Human populations threaten to overwhelm dragon populations in a few short decades if the dragons don't work to cull the human population.

The relative distribution of the human areas to the dragon areas is given below. Humans are marked in cyan. Dragons are marked in violet.

[Dragons occupy three corners of the crater. Humans occupy only the southeast corner.]
